General Job Description

 

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the month-end close process.  This is a hands-on position that will have the opportunity to work in many areas within the accounting function with expanding responsibilities to include leading the international and domestic subsidiary close process.  The Staff Accountant will be an integral part of the department, working with accounting professionals, engineers, and other administrative professionals.  We are looking for someone with a strong accounting background to bring value to the team and put their imprint on the improvement of processes.  This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Assistant Director of Finance and Accounting. 

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the accounting team and related departments to support the monthly close process.
  • Perform general accounting duties for the organization.
  • Maintain the Fixed Assets record in software (SAGE FAS).
  • Perform depreciation calculation for all fixed assets and corresponding JEs for month-end.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and adjust entries to ensure that accounts are consistent, accurate, and complete.
  • Support contract routing process in accordance with internal quality control program policies and procedures.
  • Utilize accounting systems (Deltek Vision and EleVia’s Electronic Invoicing) to drive the billing and invoicing process for contracts.
  • Effectively communicate with Project Managers (PMs) regarding contract documents, change orders, modifications, approvals, and any billing-related requests.
  • Assess and pursue opportunities to maximize client billing.
  • Discuss unbilled amounts with PMs to optimize billing opportunities for the period.
  • Prepare account analyses to assist with external and internal audits.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Assist with intercompany transactions and subsidiary month-end close process.
  • Perform additional assignments as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Two (2) to (3) three years of experience in general accounting and/or accounts payable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounts payable vouching/payment process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting concepts (debit/credits).
  • Two (2) to (3) three years of payroll processing experience is a plus.
  • CPA is a plus.

Skills – Technical & Personal

  • Knowledge of US GAAP.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
  • Logical problem-solving and demonstrated ability to organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in designing and maintaining electronic spreadsheets.
  • Effectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact timelines, accuracy, and reliability of financial/billing data.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, specifically MS Excel.
  • Knowledge of Deltek Vision version 7.6, Deltek Vantagepoint or other accounting software, a plus.
  • Knowledge of UKG Pro Software is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong time management and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities, and see tasks through to completion.
  • Persistent, questioning attitude and ability to accept that in others.
  • Motivated to expand skills and knowledge, as well as tackle new problems and take on new responsibilities.
  • Strong desire to grow as a professional in the accounting field.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functional teams.
