    General Job Description

     

    MPR is actively seeking an experienced Industrial Designer for a full time position to support our product development business. This business is responsible for development of medical and diagnostic devices as well as commercial products. Work is accomplished by a multi-disciplinary integrated project team, beginning with development of user requirements and product conceptualization, detailed design, all the way through the process of transfer to manufacturing.

     

    The job location is at MPR’s offices in Chelmsford, MA.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

    • Planning and leading the industrial design efforts of various product types, including single-use products and capital equipment
    • Assisting usability engineers with user research (e.g., contextual inquiry) and formative usability evaluations
    • Brainstorming and generating concepts with client and project teams.
    • Creating compelling product solutions that fulfill user needs, business needs, and technical requirements
    • Communicating detailed product designs and features through hand sketching, mock-ups, model making, rapid prototyping, and digital rendering
    • Creating intuitive, digital user experiences in collaboration with software engineers through wireframes, graphical theme ideation, prototypes, and pixel-perfect artwork generation
    • Preparing and presenting industrial design project deliverables to clients
    • Constructing prototype products for demonstration and design verification testing

    Qualifications

    Education 

    • Bachelor Fine Arts (BFA) or Bachelors Science in Industrial Design (BSID) degree from an accredited program

    Travel

     As required by project assignments. Estimated is 15% to 20%

     

    Technical Skills and Experience

    • Five (5) - 15 years of professional design experience in corporate or consulting design environments; experience designing medical products preferred
    • Strong design portfolio that demonstrates user-centered design processes, excellent problem solving skills, and thoughtful attention to details. Project samples should showcase the ability to rapidly generate concept solutions through sketching, and the ability to refine concepts into compelling products through an understanding of form, function, color, materials, and finishes
    • Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. Experience designing parts for plastic injection molding, thermoforming, machining, and sheet metal fabrication. Detailed knowledge of injection molded part design and tooling is
    • Highly proficient in building physical mock-ups/model-making
    • Highly proficient in CAD tools (SolidWorks) with advanced surfacing skills
    • Highly proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) for creating presentation deliverables and Graphical User Interface (GUI) artwork.
    • Highly proficient with digital rendering software (e.g., MODO, KeyShot) for communicating product form, color, materials, finishes, and features
    • Working knowledge of Axure RP software desired
    • Working knowledge of Human Factors. Familiarity with ANSI/AAMI HE75 desired
    • Working knowledge of polygon and subdivision surface modeling software (e.g., MODO or similar) desired
    • Working knowledge of animation, video editing, and motion graphics software desired. (e.g., MODO, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe After Effects or similar)

    Skills - Personal

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and senior management
    • Ability to multi-task across teams of engineers and managers on various projects
    • Ability to mentor more junior engineers and oversee their work efforts
    • Motivated to tackle new problems and take on new responsibilities
    • Good time management and organization skills
